Men who require big and tall clothing often leave stores feeling disappointed. In most department stores where big and tall clothing is available, the merchandise selection is small and the clothing is unattractive to the shopper. As a result, these men have no other choice but to go to specialty stores and purchase clothing at extremely high prices. In order to solve today’s issue, department stores need to offer a greater availability of men’s big and tall clothing to choose from. Men who are beyond average sizing require clothing needs just like any other person. The clothing needs for these men are often overlooked and this issue needs to be addressed and solved.
I have been working for Belk department store for over a year now and I have repeatedly had to recommend shoppers elsewhere, so that they could find what they were looking for. Belk in comparison to other department stores offers more of a variety of men’s big and tall clothing. Although this may be true, the men’s big and tall selection for this store and nearly any other department store is still shallow. There should be almost an equal amount of men’s big and tall clothing as there is men’s regular size clothing.
In today’s society, people have easy access to food and because of this; men are of all different sizes and shapes. Not only can weight be analyzed for decision making purposes in the fashion retail industry but a person’s height and natural body build can studied as well. Not all men who require big and tall clothing are wide around the waist and short in height. Some men are naturally tall and slim and others may take on a combination of several different body characteristics. Other factors of equal importance are the analysis of race and age. In most scenarios, a twenty-one year old African American male would not wear the same attire as a forty-four year old Caucasian male. The studying of the demographics for men who require big and tall clothing could go even further and include such information such as occupation, income, and the location of residence.
Clothing designers, clothing manufacturers, fashion buyers and all others involved in fashion retail need to take this information into consideration when developing a men’s big and tall merchandise assortment. A department store should tend to the needs of all men who may happen to fit within this category, consisting of an array of men with different body builds and those who are of different race, age, and etc.

Woman of Color
Woman of Color
I work as a salesman within a retail department store and while on the job, I witnessed this beautiful woman dressed precisely from head to toe. She appeared to have much self confidence and it showed in her run ray model strut. She wore an elegant scoop neck sleeveless dress. The color scheme of the dress complemented very well to her luscious light brown skin complexion. The dress was predominately black featuring brown and badge accent colors. All of the accessories that she wore coordinated sharply with her dress and her daring stiletto heels did so too. This beautiful woman of color knows how to professionally dress and her gracefulness caught my attention for a glimpse of time.
The White and Red Trimmed Tennis Shoe
The White and Red Trimmed Tennis Shoe
When it comes to fashion styling, I know what and what not to wear. I am currently earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Marketing and Management and have been working as a salesman in the retail business for quite some time. Just recently, while on my lunch break at work, I was scrolling down the walkways within the mall. I noticed this guy and I was immediately drawn to his shoes. He wore white and red trimmed tennis shoes. The color of his shoes was not what grabbed my attention. The fact that he was a grown man walking on the tips of his toes was very unusual. His walk caused his shoes to show significant signs of creasing around the forefront of each shoe. Not only were his shoes badly creased but they were filthy. In my opinion, his shoes may be accepted while playing baseball on a grassy field but when it comes to wearing these at the mall, this is something not to be worn.

The Obama's dress code
Michelle Obama’s shorts and Barack Obama’s “mom jeans”
First lady Michelle Obama is an icon to the entire world. Some ponder whether or not she should dress more conservative or stay true to herself, wearing whatever makes her feel comfortable. Recently the Obama family visited the Grand Canyon and Michelle Obama was seen in shorts that the critics argued as being to short. MSNBC writer Bobble Thomas says Michelle Obama has long legs and she pulled of the look. I believe the First Lady was dressed for the occasion when seen on the family trip. Regardless, Michelle Obama is a normal person and in my opinion, as long as she plays her role in the White House, she is ok to wear whatever she pleases. Contrary she is an important figure in the eyes of the entire world and she should portray herself in a manner that reflects this image.
President Barack Obama was seen throwing the first pitch at the All Star Game and he has been criticized for his choice in jeans. Meredith Vieira from the today show shared her opinion about his jeans. She said, “they were to short and to baggy”. The media is calling his jeans “mom jeans”. “Even though Barack Obama is the United States President, I feel that he is being wrongly criticized for what he whore. Yes he is the President but how else do you expect a person to dress at a baseball game. I don’t believe he should have worn something formal because the occasion didn’t call for it.

I am a fashion marketing and management student at The Art Institute of Charlotte. My long term goal is to some day open up a men's clothing store offering tailor-made garments. My strong skills at this point are fashion styling, visual merchandising and the art of delivering excellent customer service. I got my first job at the age of 14 working for McDonald's as a maintenance person. This job taught me the fundamentals of customer service. I currently work in the fashion retail business as a sales associate. Throughout my work experience, I have gained so much knowledge about the importance of treating people with respect. The next time you go into a store, treat the person helping you with respect.
